In what could have been described as another deadly attack, troops of the ‘Operation Lafiya Dole’ with support from Civilian JTF members and youth volunteers on Sunday prevented a Male suicide Bomber gaining entry into Maiduguri metropolis.
This is coming barely 24 hours when twin suicide bombers detonated their Improvised Explosive Devices killing 8 people at Bakassi resettlement camps meant for Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, while the other which took place opposite NNPC Depot in the metropolis left three people dead.
The failed attack by the male suicide bomber our correspondent gathered took place at about 8:45am, when members of the civilian JTF in operation around Hajiya Zille community along Maiduguri- Damboa road sighted the suicide bomber trying to sneak into the town before they alerted military who swung into action shooting and killing the suicide bomber while he attempted to escape.
Sources said, the suicide bomber who was in his 30th, had to enter into a Mosque at the frontage of the NNPC mega station, opposite Hajiya Zille village off Maiduguri-Damboa road, when he discovered that he was being trailed by the civilian JTF members. The suicide bomber according to sources stayed in that mosque for about 15 minutes pretending to be praying, and when he still realized there was not exit for him, he took to his heels before he was killed by a soldier who pursued him with a motorcycle.
A civilian JTF member, Usman Modu Ali who participated in repelling the attack said, “We were in a routine patrol/operation when we sighted a strange face coming out from the outskirt of Maiduguri around Molai axis, and when we ordered him to stop and identified himself by also raising up his cloth he was wearing, he declined, as he approach the town. ” We immediately began to suspected him as one of the suicide bombers. We then alerted the military who came timely after he (the suicide bomber) had almost reached close to Bakassi camp.
Unfortunately, today is Sunday and we also suspected that he is out to target worshippers.
