#Rio2016: South Africa’s Van Niekerk wins 400m final, breaks 17 years standing records

Wayde Van Niekerk made Africa proud when he sensationally set a new world record in the 400m final in Rio Olympic Games.

With a 100m speed, he won in 44.03 seconds and became the first South African to win this èvent in 96 years. With this myth, he smashes Michael Johnson's record to claim 400m gold.

He set the stadium on fire and for a while South African flags turned the colours in the stadium. Kirani James of Grenada won the silver in 43.76 seconds and LaShawn Merritt of USA won the silver.

After Van Niekerk’s triumph, one reporter asked him whether people can trust his record. “You can’t be anyone’s favourite. What I can do is control the controllable, and stay as disciplined as I can be, and focused on goals and life,” the South African replied. “The beginning of the year I had the opportunity to break the sub-10, as I believe the talent God has blessed me.”

Another reporter said he hasn’t answered the question. What do you say to people who say you are on drugs, the reporter asked. “I know I am not,” Van Niekerk replied.
