Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng has said it would be an honour if he is named the first black captain in the Germany national team’s history.
Germany are currently without a captain after Manchester United midfielder Schweinsteiger, 32, announced his retirement from international football following Euro 2016.
Boateng, who was the subject of controversial remarks made by a politician from Germany’s right-wing Alternative fur Deutschland party this summer, first voiced his dream of becoming the country’s first black captain in 2014 and he has now told kicker that he “would love to do it,” is “ready for it” and that it “would fit” him.
“Of course, this would set an example,” Boateng said. “It would indeed be a huge honour to occupy such a role as the first black guy. That would be significant.”
Boateng, named Germany’s Footballer of the Year for 2015-16, also acknowledged that there are “other great players who could also do it,” with Bayern’s Manuel Neuer, Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Juventus’ Sami Khedira among the other candidates.
