A charter bus crash early Tuesday morning in Merced, California, killed at least five people and injured others, officials told NBC affiliate KCRA.
The crash happened around 3:35 a.m. PT as the bus was going from Southern California to Sacramento, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Moises Onsurez told KCRA. At least 30 people were on board.
The bus appears to have swerved and hit a pole, which then pierced the bus, according to Onsurez.
The California Highway Patrol in Merced said it was "investigating a major injury traffic collision" on Highway 99 northbound. It did not specify how many people were injured.
