Lecturers of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State yesterday announced a sit-at-home action, saying the suspension of all teaching activities would continue until the state government was ready to pay their 23 months subvention arrears.
The lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), OOU branch, said the industrial action became imperative because government had failed to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with them in December.
Speaking with reporters at the end of their congress held at the permanent campus of the institution in Ago-Iwoye, they alleged that the unpaid subvention had accumulated to N3.5billion.
ASUU’s chairman, Dr. Deji Agboola declared that the lecturers would not return to work until the issues contained in the MoU were attended to.
Agboola explained that following a warning strike embarked upon by the lecturers last year, the government reached an agreement with them by signing the MoU on December 31, 2015.
He noted that the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which the university management had been using to pay workers’ salaries had dried up.
