Katy Perry just set a new Twitter record when she reached 90 million followers on Friday, July 1. Twitter announced the huge milestone with a tweet.
“It’s party time, @katyperry! With 90 million on the guest list, we’re gonna need a really big dance floor,” the social media network wrote.
“Dang this is tight,” Perry, 31, responded, adding a cool emoji with sunglasses and a smirk.
The “This Is How We Do” singer, who skyrocketed to fame with her 2008 single “I Kissed a Girl,” joined Twitter in 2009 while on tour in Germany.
“Just got into Berlin... feeling better thank you, have my vicks inhaler by my bedside... and P.S. I TWITTTTER! GAH. Such a follower!” her first tweet on February 20, 2009, read.
Since then, Perry’s shared some pretty sweet — and silly! — moments. Some of her most popular tweets include February 1, 2015, Twitpic of her younger self-holding a microphone with a poignant message: “She had the dream, always believed in herself & her worth. Today she is the one smiling.” The post was retweeted more than 51,000 times.
And in July 2015, when she threw some not-so-subtle shade at nemesis Taylor Swift during the “Bad Blood” singer’s feud with Nicki Minaj, that tweet was shared more than 59,300 times.
“Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman…,” she wrote.
When it comes to Twitter followers, Perry is well ahead of Swift, who has 79 million, and Justin Bieber, with 83.9 million. She even has more Twitter clout than President Barack Obama, who’s got, 75.8 million followers.
