The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ajali in Orumba North Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, in an attempt to arrest members of a notorious gang terrorizing Nanka Community, had one of his ears chopped off and was disrobed.
The DPO and his team raided the den of the nine-man gang and successfully arrested Mr Ifedilichukwu Nwankwo, Mr Chidi Nwankwo and Mr Udoye Kenechukwu after previous attempts by the Police Force Criminal Investigations Department (Force CID), Abuja and Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia.
Amidst the parade of the gang members at the headquarters of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), police spokesperson Mr Akwuzu Okechukwu stated that the DPO was ambushed, his clothes ripped to shreds, one of his ears chopped off. According to Mr Okechukwu, the DPO is receiving treatment at a hospital.
The arrest is a big win for the police as the gang had been terrorizing Nanka for years. According to the Police Public Relations Office (PPRO), the gang has been linked to other attacks in the region. Their notoriety led to the police’s efforts to mobilize men to arrest the suspects at Nanka.
The gang's activities have also been linked to the death of Mr Okechukwu Udezuka of Orifite in Ekwusigo LGA and one Mr Ebuka at Tarzan area of Nkpor, near Onitsha, on February 2, 2014. Confirming the allegations, the gang members confessed that Mr Nwanwko and his gang killed the victims.
