NLC declares indefinite strike in Nasarawa over 50% Salary Cut

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Nassarawa State Chapter on Friday declared an indefinite strike in the state, over the state government’s decision to cut civil servants’ salaries by half.
The state chairman of the NLC, Comrade Abdullahi Adeka made the disclosure while addressing reporters at the Labour House in Lafia, the state capital.

Recall that the state governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura had maintained that his government will cut down the salaries of its workers.

But Adeka explained that the indefinite strike became necessary following the inability of the state government to reverse its decision to cut salaries of civil servants in the state by 50 percent.

He said, “We staged a peaceful protest to the government house on Monday 4, where we made it clear that if by the government did not reverse its decision to cut our salaries would embark on strike.

“We told the Deputy Governor, Mr Silas Agara who came and received our petition on behalf of the Governor that at the close of work on Monday, the government must reverse the workers unfriendly decision or face the strike.

“Since the government remains adamant, the unions would use its only weapon which is a strike to press home its demands until the government return and maintain the status-quo.”
