Four kids were stabbed to death Friday at an apartment complex in a Memphis, Tennessee, suburb, according to reports.
Following the stabbing, police took the children's mother into custody for questioning, but she has not been charged, the Associated Press reports.
Authorities have not identified the mother or announced how old the children were, but a sheriff's office spokesman reportedly referred to them as "babies."
"This is an egregious act of evil that has shocked us to our core," Sheriff Bill Oldham said, according to the AP. "I will never understand how anyone can do this."
According to a local paper, the Commercial Appeal, all of the victims were under 6 years old, and one 7-year-old escaped the stabbing. Police are unsure if anyone else was present at the scene at the time of the incident, according to the paper.
The Tennessee Department of Children's Services had no reports of violence that involved the mother and children, Commercial Appeal reported.
However, Fox News reported that County Commissioner Mark Billingsley was questioning whether or not she had mental health issues.
