President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday inaugurated the Abuja-Kaduna commercial rail operation.
The inauguration had several senior government officials in attendance such as the president of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Minister for Transport, Rotimi Amaechi amongst others.
The commissioning of the project had been postponed on different occasions, but today’s event has opened it up for full commercial operations of the rail project.
Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s opposition party, the PDP had congratulated President Buhari on the commissioning. It also recognised the work done by former president Goodluck Jonathan and former Minister for Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The modernisation phase of the project commenced with the signing of the contract for the construction of Abuja (Idu) to Kaduna (Rigasa) rail line in 2009.
Buhari said the new rail line would help ease movement of passengers and cargo in a cheap and safe environment between the Federal Capital Territory and Kaduna State.
