Noise Pollution: Lagos State Government Seals 53 Churches, Mosques and Hotels

The Lagos State government, yesterday, sealed 53 churches, mosques and hotels across the metropolis over noise pollution and other environmental nuisances.

General Manager of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Engr. Adebola Shabi in an interview after sealing the religious houses and the hotels said that the premises were shut following complaints from the residents.

He lamented that the premises shut were approved for residential but after few years, they have converted worship centres, saying “It has been constituting a nuisance to other neighbours.”


Shabi explained that some of the affected facilities had been served abatement notices before the eventual closure, adding that the growing rate of worship centres calls for serious regulations, especially in the areas of noise generated across the state.

He noted that the worship centres that often disturb the people were usually makeshift structures, adding that the hotels were shut for failing to conduct and submit Environmental Impact Assessment report.

Shabi also said that the state government would not condone improper dispose of sewage, saying that the state government would not condone the usage of old latrines.
