Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that Manchester United have signed "two top class players" in the form of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
The Red Devils have today completed a double swoop for the midfield pair, which will boost Louis van Gaal's options in the centre of the park significantly.
Schweinsteiger has a vast level of experience, while Schneiderlin's performances for the Saints in the Premier League have been met with widespread praise in recent years.
Wenger, meanwhile, has revealed that he expected a reaction from Old Trafford this summer after their fourth place finish last season, which may have secured Champions League football but was unlikely to satisfy the club's ambition.
“We knew Man United would not be happy to finish outside the top three and that they would respond," he said.
"They’ve made interesting buys. They did it by buying two important players - Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin - but two top class players, one who goes up to the top level and one who has done it all,” Wenger declared.
Both Arsenal and Manchester United are hopeful that they can close the gap on reigning Premier League champions Chelsea, who finished eight points ahead of the chasing pack last season.
Meanwhile, Petr Cech is the sole purchase that the Gunners have made thus far, but the French manager has hinted that there is a possibility he will conduct more business before the transfer window closes: "It depends. We are still open to do something else."
