Angelina Jolie Press Statement after vist to Midyat Refugee Camp

Angelina Jolie who visited the Midyat Refugee Camp in Mardin, south-eastern Turkey, with her nine-year-old daughter Shiloh in tow on Saturday thinks refugee displacement is a “central problem” that needs more attention.

Angelina, who serves as the Special Envoy and UN High Commissioner for Refugees after her tour round the refugee camp delivered a riveting press statement on the matter of displaced peoples.
"Our world has never been richer or healthier or more advanced. Yet never before have so many people been dispossessed and stripped of their basic human rights," she noted in the UNHCR press statement. "We should call this what it is: not just a 'refugee crisis,' but a crisis of global security and governance, that is manifesting itself in the worst refugee crisis ever recorded and a time of mass displacement.
"This is a central problem. We cannot pick and choose which human rights violations we will and won't tolerate.”
At the moment, over 60 million people around the world have been dispossessed from their homes, a number that raised significantly, as just last year this statistic was tallied at 51 million.
And Angelina was proud to tour Midyat Refugee Camp with her and husband Brad Pitt's daughter by her side.
"Shiloh is very aware that I hold refugee families in high regard and has been asking to come on missions and meet them for many years," she told People magazine.
Shiloh spent some time speaking with a girl named Hala, an orphan who lives with her five relatives in a tent.
According to Angelina, her tot was deeply moved by the experience.
"Upon leaving the family, Shiloh asked many questions," the Mr. & Mrs. Smith star revealed to the magazine. "It is of course hard to explain all of the harsh realities of war and displacement. She said she felt sad, but was happy that she went and is looking forward to the next visit."
