World's Oldest Person Misao Okawa dies aged 117

Misao Okawa, the world's oldest person, died on Wednesday at the age of 117. Members of her family told the Associated Press that Okawa died of heart failure and stopped breathing at her nursing home in Osaka, Japan.

Okawa had turned 117 only a few weeks ago, and was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2013 for being the oldest person on the planet. When asked for her secret to longevity, Okawa, the daughter of a kimono maker, said, "I wonder about that too."

An official at Okawa's nursing home told the AP, "She went so peacefully, as if she had just fallen asleep. We miss her a lot."

The title of world's oldest person now belongs to Gertrude Weaver of Arkansas. According to the Gerontology Research Group, Weaver is 116 years old. Congratulations!

Rest in peace, Misao.
