Few days ago there was the story that Nigeria has recalled is High Commision from South Africa due to the current Xenophobic Attacks and South African Government issues a statement to be disappointed if that was actually true. But the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, refuted that fact by saying they never recalled the Nigerian High Commissioner from South Africa.
The Minister of State II for Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro had on Sunday through his official Twitter account dispelled media reports that Nigeria has recalled its envoy to South Africa.
In an official statement on Monday by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Ministry reaffirmed that the statement earlier issued by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was “to summon, for routine consultation, the Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria to South Africa and the Consul General in Johannesburg over the xenophobic attacks on some foreigners, including Nigerians, in South Africa. This is a usual practice in the conduct of diplomacy”, the statement read.
“Much as the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and the generality of Nigerians are deeply concerned about the xenophobic attacks, there are satisfactory indications that the South African authorities have taken firm measures to stem the tide of the attacks”, the statement added.
