Most Wanted Terrorist on FBI List apprehended in Somalia

Somalia has arrested one of the most wanted terrorists on the list of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, the country’s intelligence agency said Tuesday.

Liban Haji Mohamed, a Somali-born U.S. citizen and former Washington-area taxi driver, was captured while he was travelling from the southern city of Juba to the capital Mogadishu, and is being detained by security forces for questioning, Somali’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said.

The FBI had placed a 50,000 U.S. dollar bounty on the arrest of Mohamed, who left the US in 2012 for Somalia and allegedly supported the militant group Al-Shabaab.

The NISA did not provide further information on the prosecution of Mohamed as it remains unclear if he will be extradited to the US.

The FBI has indicated it is pursuing his extradition, but admitted it is challenging since Somalia and the US do not have extradition agreements.
