Cristiano Ronaldo faces punishment for celebration targeted at Barcelona fans

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo could be punished by the Spanish FA for his celebration after scoring in the El Clasico at the Camp Nou on Sunday. Ronaldo scored to equalize for the Los Blancos and decided to urge the Barca fans to ‘calm down’.

The gesture, however, has been deemed ‘provocative’ and the Portugal international could be subjected to disciplinary actions if found guilty. Spanish league (LFP) president Javier Tebas says that an investigation will be conducted as they are keen to clamp down on provocative actions in the game.

He said, “We have to be careful with provocative gestures by a player or conduct that could incite violence among spectators. It must be sanctioned, from a fine up to a suspension. We will look into it.”
Tebas, who was speaking at the Security Seminar in Barcelona, told Mundo Deportivo: “They say La Liga is the best in the world, but for that to be so, we have to be a secure league, that has silenced the cries of intolerance and violence within football.”

The policy was made more stringent after a Deportivo La Coruna fan died in a brawl before a league match in November.

The Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) reported five clubs in December as part of the crackdown. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Deportivo, Rayo Vallecano and Granada were all charged due to offensive chanting by their fans.

Recently Barcelona fans provoked another disciplinary action for ‘Cristiano is a drunk’ chants during a game.
