Markets Shutdown as Lagos State Government ensure PVC Collection

The Lagos State government has ordered the closure of all markets in the state today, to enable market men and women to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC).

The order followed Friday’s public holiday, which was aimed at ensuring workers in the state obtain their PVCs in time for the first round of elections on Feb. 14.

The state government had also appealed to the private sector in the state to grant their workers half day on Friday to enable them collect their voters’ card. However, only a few private establishments granted the request. The collection of the PVCs ends tomorrow.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to announce its final decision on whether the elections will continue as scheduled today. The Council of State had earlier, in its meeting discussed the pros and cons of postponing the elections as suggested in some quarters. However, the Council noted that INEC reserves the right to either postpone or go ahead with the elections as planned.

Although a postponement does not look likely, if it happens, the commission may add more days for the collection of PVCs.

going ahead with the conduct of the general elections on February 14 and 28.
