Congratulations El nino, at least youvare proving your critics wrong who thought it was over for you. After a rather eventful winter transfer window that saw a number of players move within leagues and to other leagues as well, UEFA.com asked its fans who the best signing of the window was. Followers on Twitter and Facebook were asked to name their top five signings and over 50 million people voted.
5) Andre Schurrle – Chelsea to Wolfsburg
The German World Cup winner was hardly a prominent name on the team sheet this season at Stamford Bridge and found starts difficult to come by under Jose Mourinho. With other players like Eden Hazard and Willian preferred on either side of Diego Costa, Schurrle was limited to only a little over 400 minutes all season in the league. Eventually, the Blues had to make way for Juan Cuadrado and Schurrle was offloaded to Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg for a sum reported to be approximately £22m.
4) Xherdan Shaqiri – Bayern Munich to Inter Milan
Inter Milan signed a number of players in January, a number of which were loan signings. They signed Lukas Podolski from Arsenal on loan, but their biggest capture was undoubtedly Xherdan Shaqiri from Bayern Munich. A quality talent who played less than 400 minutes in all competitions for the German giants has already netted once for Inter in the Coppa Italia.
3) Seydou Doumbia – CSKA Moscow to AS Roma
The 27-year-old Ivory Coast forward had been in superb form for the Russian club. He was a prolific goalscorer who had scored 61 goals in 95 games in the Russian Premier League. He was a constant threat in the Champions League too having scored three times against Premier League champions Manchester City in the group stages. Roma spent £10.8m to sign him and he will only look to improve under Rudi Garcia.
2) Wilfried Bony – Swansea to Manchester City
The Ivorian was scored the most goals in the EPL in the calendar year 2014 beating the likes of now-teammate Sergio Aguero. The Manchester club spent £25m which could rise to £28m to bring him into the side. Moving to City is a step up for Bony as they are still in the Champions League and he has already replaced Stevan Jovetic in the Champions League squad. With Aguero prone to injury and Edin Dzeko not performing as well as he used to, Bony could be a potentially great signing for City.
1) Fedrando Torres – AC Milan to Atletico Madrid
The 30-year-old forward left his boyhood club in 2007 to join Liverpool where he became a lethal striker for the Reds. But a record-breaking move to Chelsea saw him struggle to adapt and eventually saw his stock and form fall. The Blues cut their losses and allowed him to move to AC Milan in summer of 2014. But he failed to find his knack for scoring goals in the Serie A too and finally Diego Simeone brought him back to Atletico Madrid where he has found a new lease of life and has already scored in crucial games against Real Madrid and Barcelona.
